‘Dieren onder de wielen’, literally translated as ‘Animals under wheels’ is a citizen science roadkill monitoring project. Since 2008 over 70.000 observations of roadkills have been recorded in Belgium through the website www.dierenonderdewielen.be and smartphone apps (ObsMapp for Android, iObs for iPhone, WinObs for Windows). The project started in Belgium, but the tools are applicable worldwide. The data is used to identify and mitigate roadkill hotspots.
